What Trended in 2016 — A Look Back

2016 was a year that many people can’t wait to forget. And yes, plenty of unfortunate things happened, but there were also some memorable things that kept our interest.

But when it comes to trends, especially on the Internet, videos and articles just make the rounds. It seems everyone sees the latest trends. Even my parents asked me what color that dress was and for a moment I was like, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. If something is a hit, it’s going to reach anyone who has a computer. That’s just how it works. So here’s a look back at some of the top trends of 2016.

Carpool Karaoke

Who among us can honestly say they don’t shout out loud to their favorite songs when they think no one’s watching (or maybe they just don’t care!). There’s something about singing along that convinces us our voices are better, that we’re musically inclined, and that we’ve clearly missed our calling. But when you get to that stoplight and have to turn it down a smidge, your voice goes down with it because you know you stink. BUT…that won’t ever stop us from belting out the high notes to make getting from here to there more interesting. Just ask the Late Late Show…

Pokemon go

Holy cow. As it turns out, there are a lot of people like me that like doing useless things for entertainment. And this past year had millions of people from all over the world scrambling to collect them all in this augmented reality game played with a smart phone. It wasn’t uncommon to see people wondering the streets searching for cartoon monsters to appear and jump levels. The beauty of this little gem? There is a Pokemon Go Level Speed Calculator that can tell you just about how long it will take you to complete the final level, and let me tell ya, it ain’t any time soon! So keep on playing because you might not hit your goal until the year 2025!

Ford Bronco

Last year gave us confirmation that the iconic Ford Bronco will be back, but not until 2020. The anticipation, however, has propelled drivers to be so elated for its resurgence that it was a highlight of 2016. There is even a Bronco fan site that continually guesstimates the look and feel of the 6th generation Bronco. The fact of the matter is that we expect Ford to bring the house when it comes to design, specs, and dimensions that will not compromise when it comes to functionality and off-road versatility. It’s like the night before Christmas, but for like 3 more years!

Prince

One event that had fans across the globe in tears was the passing of a true music god: Prince. A truly unique soul and one of the most impressive musicians that is said to have played every single one of the 27 instruments heard on his debut album. And by the way, he was only 20 years old at the time. He wrote mega hit songs for other artists and vowed to record a song every single day. An artist with this kind of dedication is one that clearly has changed the musical landscape, shaping and influencing countless other artists. And because this is a tire/automotive blog, how could I not mention that he had a rather unexpectedly phenomenal car and motorcycle collection.

Powerball

For the first time ever, the Powerball jackpot in January of 2016 reached over a billion dollars. The huge number sent people to every gas station and corner store, playing all of their lucky numbers and their best friends’ luckiest numbers. Lucky winners in three states claimed a share in the $1.58 billion jackpot. Split three ways, that’s $528,784,000 million each!

With that kind of payout, you could buy over a thousand 2016 Lamborghini Aventadors! But don’t. That’d be a really dumb idea. Or you could head up to space with the Russian Space Program to the International Space Station…seven times. Or heck, just go ahead and buy an island. Not sure how you’ll get your car there, though. Not sure how you’ll get your car there, though. But one thing is for sure, you’ll have a place to lie down.

Although these five things didn’t necessarily define ourselves or our year entirely, they are a reflection of what we found interest in. And the Internet kept track of it all. What did you love about 2016? And what are you looking forward to in 2017? I know I can’t wait for flying cars. Those are still due, right?
