We’ve all had those mornings where we woke up late or just lost track of time, and the stress of scrambling to get to work on time is the opposite of fun. But sometimes, it’s a good idea to be late for work on purpose. Here’s why.
Be Late for Work So You Can Exercise
Many of us want to get in shape or stay in shape but can’t ever find the time. I used to exercise after work when I was younger, but nowadays I’m all out of energy at the end of the day. I’ve tried convincing myself that I’ll do something, anything to exercise once I get home, but the moment I walk through my front door, that couch is way too inviting.
Lately, I’ve been coming in later to work twice a week so I can exercise in the morning. Since it’s at the start of the day, the time I’ve reserved can’t get filled with other things like errands, social outings, or getting stuck late at the office.
Plus, I feel more energized throughout the day, and just knowing that I’ve already got a workout under my belt means I can do other things in the evening without feeling like I’ve let myself down by skipping another workout.
Be Late for Work to Avoid Traffic
Getting to work (and leaving) late can help you avoid some of the hassle of rush hour traffic. When it comes to commute times, I’m a spoiled brat. I’m only 8 miles away from the office, and it used to take me 15 minutes. Thanks to construction on the highway I take, lately it’s been taking me 20 or 25 minutes to get home after work.
So some days, I work 9–6 instead of 8–5. Both to work and back, my commute is back down to 15 minutes, even as few as 12 on good days.
Be Late for Work to Reduce Stress
Now this one depends on your company, because some are much more flexible than others. But I’ve worked at places where it didn’t matter when I came or went as long as I got my hours in and finished work on time.
The first time I got a job with this sort of flexibility, it was unnerving. I felt guilty for rolling in at 9:30 instead of 9, but nobody cared. I’d go to apologize and my boss wouldn’t even have it. It took some getting used to, but once I did it was so nice. I never felt rushed in the morning, and I was much more calm and collected when I got to the work—a great way to start the day.
Not everyone will be able to use these reasons for being late for work. Some companies or positions just don’t allow for that level of flexibility. But if yours does, I highly recommend getting to work late on purpose.
