Mario in a Mercedes-Benz

I am by no means a gamer. But then there’s Mario Kart. I’ll play that for hours at a time. It’s been a favorite of countless gamers and non-gamers alike for years. Actually, almost all of the games in the Mario Brothers franchise are loved by hardcore joystick heads and casual, random-button-mashing game players like me. Over the years, we’ve seen Mario sporting magical fireball overalls, wearing a penguin suit, riding a dinosaur, and driving a go-kart. Now, players of Mario Kart 8 (MK8) can see Mario riding in style in a Mercedes-Benz.

The Cartoon Mercedes-Benz

The Nintendo and Mercedes-Benz collaboration has added the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class to the list of vehicles that your favorite Mario Brothers character can drive. Creating video game versions of real cars is a long-standing tradition. However, this is the first ever real car to appear in any of the Mario Kart games. So finally, there’s an option for those who want to drive a luxury vehicle while bombing the competition with red shells.

The Actual Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

This new MK8 vehicle wasn’t invented by Nintendo designers. It’s based on an actual Mercedes-Benz vehicle. And playing MK8 is a great way to get behind the wheel of the GLA-Class before the US release of the real-world version. When it does hit the US streets in fall of 2014, there will be 2 versions: the GLA250 4matic and the GLA45 4matic AMG.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4matic SUV

The GLA250 4matic version is the base version of GLA-Class. At a glance, it features a 2.0-liter turbo engine, 208 horsepower, and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. This new SUV can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 7.1 seconds. In terms of styling, the GLA250 offers what the world has come to expect from Mercedes-Benz: high quality materials, bold designs, and an attention to detail that makes every inch of this vehicle pure luxury.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA45 4matic AMG SUV

The top-of-the-GLA-line GLA45 brings the AMG badge to the new SUV class. The 2.0-liter turbo engine of the AMG version has 355 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. This version can get you from 0 to 60 in just 4.8 seconds. Because this is a handcrafted AMG vehicle, it includes several other features that will make it stand out from the many SUVs on the road.

The Crossover Doesn’t End There

Not that kind of crossover. We’ve already established that the GLA-Class is an SUV, not a CUV. You better keep up if you have any chance of capturing that Mushroom Cup. I’m talking about the Nintendo-Mercedes marketing crossover. It doesn’t end in the video game world. Mercedes-Benz Japan has released a commercial for the GLA-Class that features a live action Mario. There’s also a playable, standalone GLA website that features the 8-bit graphics of the original Super Mario Bros. World 1-1.

So tell RightTurn what you think? Are you excited for the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class in the real-word, in Mario Kart 8, or both? What real car would you love to see tearing up Rainbow Road?
