On more than one occasion, my boyfriend has pointed out “the really cool rims” on another car. Sometimes the terms “blacked out” and “chrome” would crop up in the conversation. Never wanting to admit that I had no idea what he was talking about, I just sort of eagerly nod my head and smiled.
Now, thanks to interning at RightTurn, I finally know what a rim is. So, for any of you out there who aren’t quite sure what a rim is, you’re about to find out!
First things first: despite what many believe, a wheel and a rim actually aren’t the same thing. A wheel refers to a tire that’s been mounted on to a rim. So really, a rim is part of the wheel.
Rims have been around for quite some time — about 3,000 years! Way back when, rims were actually made of wood and hammered onto a set of spokes. Today, most rims are made of one metal piece.
Rims play a major role in a vehicle’s handling. The size and weight of rims have a lot to do with this. Rims can affect how smoothly a vehicle rolls and how it handles different road surfaces. It turns out that rims can even affect a vehicle’s gas mileage.
So, not only do rims do all these things for performance and handling, but they also — as my boyfriend thinks — can look pretty cool. Rims can be a fun way to personalize your vehicle because they come in so many different shapes, sizes, designs, and colors — even pink!
