Virtual Reality Technology? Try Volvo Reality

If this isn’t your first time at the blog, you may already know about my obsession with car apps and car technology. And I gotta say, I love Volvo’s virtual reality technology app — Volvo Reality — designed for Google Cardboard.

I was lucky enough to nab a free Volvo-branded Google Cardboard while they were available, and once it came in the mail I assembled it, downloaded the Volvo Reality app, and locked myself in the bathroom.

Okay I didn’t actually lock the door, but I did shut it and turn the lights off so I could really immerse myself in the beautiful Volvo Reality universe. Necessary? Not exactly. Weird? Who’s judging…

Volvo Reality is Awesome

Why? Because the smartphone, app, and cardboard headset work together perfectly to deliver a remarkably immersive and responsive experience.

Volvo Reality plays a video that’s split into two nearly identical halves, and the Google Cardboard headset and lenses focus each eye on only its half of the video for a 3D effect.

The video includes a few different scenes inside and outside a Volvo XC90. Using your smartphone’s gyroscopic sensors, the video responds as you move your head.

Turn left toward the driver’s side window and see trees whooshing past. Tilt your head down to see brake and gas pedals. Turn around and peer through the rear windshield. (Volvo even had the courtesy to remove the driver’s headrest so it wouldn’t obstruct your view! Thanks, Volvo.)

Download Volvo Reality

My fellow iPhone owners can get Volvo Reality at the Apple App Store, and you Android folk can find it on Google Play. Volvo is all out of the free Volvo-branded handsets, but you still have options if you want to get Google Cardboard.

While you’re waiting for your Google Cardboard to arrive, you can head to Volvo’s website and preview their Volvo Reality video. (It may even help you when you’re trying to figure out how to assemble the thing.)

Alright, let’s have a quick show of hands (comments):

  • Do you have Google Cardboard?
  • Have you tried the Volvo Reality app?
  • If so, what did you think?
  • Did you try locking yourself in the bathroom too?
